Future Requirements and Prospects for Satellite Altimetry over the Oceans
Recommendations from the European GAMBLE Network
The launch of Jason and Envisat has brought to 5 the number
of radar altimeters simultaneously orbiting the Earth. Plans for the next
generation of altimeters and altimeter-carrying spacecrafts are being developed.
For the near future (2005-2010), an OSTM/Jason-2 mission is being planned jointly
by CNES, NASA, EUMETSAT, and NOAA, including a core mission based on a Jason-2
follow on instrumentation, and a demonstration mission involving the new concept
of an Interferometric Wide Swath Altimeter.
Over the past 21 months, the European GAMBLE project has bought together experts
in satellite altimetry to review the technologies and mission opportunities
that may be available over the next 10 years and discuss how this technology
may be best used to satisfy the requirements of the various user communities.
Possible solutions could involve the supplementation of precise long term JASON
class missions with a number of relatively inexpensive micro-satellites, together
with the development of technological advancements such as swath altimetry.
Conclusions and recommendations from the GAMBLE network will be discussed, in
the form of oral presentations, posters and possibly computer demonstrations.
At this stage the agenda is not yet finalised.
The GAMBLE FINAL WORKSHOP AGENDA is now available
Participants will find all the practical
information they need together with a registration
form on this website.
