SWT Meeting       GENERAL INFORMATIONS      GAMBLE

From TOPEX/POSEIDON to Jason-1, 11 Years of Progress in Oceanography
Science Working Team Meeting

On December 7, 2001, the Jason-1 satellite was launched from Vandenberg (CA) to take over TOPEX/POSEIDON's altimetry mission which has been running since August 1992 and has led to remarkable results and progress in both physical oceanography and other geophysical fields. The regular meetings of the T/P-Jason-1 Science Working Team provide the opportunity for a progress report, a presentation of the most notable scientific achievements in the recent past and for technical and scientific teams to discuss data processing, performance and potential areas for improvement. The last two meetings, June 2002 in Biarritz and October 2002 in New-Orleans, were mainly dedicated to the assessment of the Jason-1 system, the calibration and validation of operational and interim geophysical data, and the checking of the in-flight performances. It was thus confirmed that the pre-launch specifications and performances were met and that the system was ready for the operational phase.
The 2003 Arles meeting will highlight several events including: the recent starting of the Jason-1 GDR production, the first science results based on the T/P and Jason-1 tandem mission as well as the combined 11 year data record, the release of near-real time data for operational applications and the support to the on-going GODAE experiment...This SWT meeting will mark also the end of the current SWT team, in place since 1998, and will precede the announcement of the new team. This is why we intend to use this Arles meeting to review the accomplishment made by the team over the past years. All Pis (or CoIs representing their team) will have the opportunity to present their work and findings to the group for further discussion and exchanges.
In order to provide sufficient time to Pi/CoIs presentations, this SWT meeting will last for 4 days, with at least 2 days dedicated to the science presentations. Project progress status will also be presented. As usual, the SWT meeting will be structured around working sessions on technical or scientific issues along with plenary sessions to introduce and close discussions and to present scientific major findings. Posters will also be displayed during the 4 days.
Members of the T/P-Jason-1 science working team and members of the project's technical teams are strongly encouraged to participate and to present their work. This SWT meeting is opened to all interested parties working on the subject of the meeting, providing that they first contact the organizers of the meeting. All authors of papers shall send an abstract to this website by following the instructions as indicated (deadline October 6).
Participants will find all the practical information they need together with the registration form on this website.
